Now that we own a property on the beach, we have a Passat G3 kayak as our main kayak, which is a tandem kayak with extra room in the middle hatch for a small child or extra gear. Plus, they’re made in BC! We got ours used from a kayak outfitter at the end of the season, and recently also purchased a tandem Passat.

My kids wear these short wetsuits in the summer. They offer great sun protection, and dressing all three kids in the same colour makes them easier to find if there are other people at the beach.

In the winter, we dress our kids in these long neoprene wetsuits, which keep them warm and safe in the water and protected from the sun. The kids wear these in the kayak or while playing in the ocean.

I have used this inexpensive clip on camera lens so many times to show my kids something cool in nature. It comes in a pack of three, but I usually just use the macro lens, and it’s well worth the $17 just for that one. It works on most phone cameras, for video or still photos of bugs, bark, flowers or anything you want to get a closer look at in the wild.

This is the chainsaw that I got for my 40th birthday from my husband. It’s electric and has a lightweight removable battery, so it’s easy to start and does not have any smell. I always wear my steel toe boots and safety gear as well.

In the bush, I use my gloves and forestry helmet to protect my hands, ears and eyes from the work. I use the chainsaw to fell dead trees on the property and cut up dead brush to make the area fire safe.

This is the guidebook I used in forestry school, and I still use it often in our new home on the island. You can also visit my Plant ID guide on the website.
