The making of the Salish Sea Map
To celebrate their move to British Columbia in 2020, Kathryn made her family a 3D clay and resin landscape painting of the Salish Sea, based on a map by Stefan Freelan.
The map was first enlarged and then traced onto the wood panel. Kathryn painted in the water to use as a guide line, before adding the land using clay. She used tools to carve the rivers and inlets. After the clay dried, she painted it using acrylic paint and sealed it.
Last, she added tinted resin to the ocean areas, and stained the wood edges a dark brown. Finished!
You can learn more about the ecology of this temperate rainforest on Kathryn’s Plant Ecology page.
